Never lose your “self”.

I was an orphan at 14 in the middle of the Great Depression. I lived in North Dakota. I had very little money. I started college at North Dakota Agricultural College, now the State University because it was cheap, $25 a quarter. The in my Sophomore year Pearl Harbor occurred. I hate to say that it saved my life but it did. I trained asa fighter pilot and flew 94 missions strafng and dive bombing, supporting the front lines.
I was one of about 17 of the 45 that was privileged to return. I paid my own way to a BS in Chemistry, again because it was cheap. Then I used the wonderful GI Bill which would pay my way to ANY school that would accept me. I got and MS n Chemistry from the George Washington University in Washington DC and a Ph. D. in Physical Organic Chemistry from Harvard University in 1956. I was so broke when I finished that I had to take a two week active duty tour in the reserves to get enough money to go to my first job.
I wound up my career as a Professor of Chemistry at California Polytechnic State University after 27 years of teaching.
I am 88 and still live with the wonderful young (19) that insisted on taking me off the shelf when I was 39. We have two wonderful children, a boy, Daniel (46) and a girl (38). I was the only boy in my generation, my son is the only boy in his generation and he and his wife have the only boy (8) in is generation.
The family is hanging on by the skin of its teeth!
I’m proud of the way my life has gone as I am sure you are proud of what you have been able to do.
You had wonderful help from the Touhy family. I had to scratch it out, more or less on my own.
We both have a lot to be proud of.

I smile a lot, always have.
It is a great help in surviving.
I admire you for the way you came through for your adopted family.

Tim, I was sorry to hear of your disappointment with Michael and his people. I will not and cannot excuse anyone’s behavior but I can offer a possible explanation….I know that there are times athletes do sign contracts with various publishing and book store companies as well as apparel and shoe companies. If they sign ANYTHING that is not the piece of equipment, book, video, shoe, etc…that is another companies product, he can lose his contract. It is disgusting to me that pro sports has been so commercialized even to a point where pro athletes like Michael can’t even sign a little boy’s jersey if it doesn’t carry the “proper” clothing tag BUT let’s look at it from the athletes perspective….he has, on the average, 5 good years to make a name for himself and earn money that you and I can only dream of. The endorsements and salaries are huge but many of these athletes have learned that life in the pros is short so you got to make all the money you can while you can still play. That includes not losing a clothing or equipment contract by signing just one jersey or helmet not made by a company that he is under contract to. Does it stink…ABSOLUTELY! BUT is it vitally important to his and his family’s future to be sure that he doesn’t violate his contracts and lose a source of income. I know that this does not help you to feel better but I wanted to be sure that you and others see it from a different point of view. Hope you get your DVD signed some day!

I have to say I would love to talk to Michaels Publicist or anyone close to Michael! He was in town last night in Ga to sign his book and he was nothing like the movie, he let the publicist tell him what to do. I had a blindside DVD and i purchased his book they told me even though I purchsed his book his people would not let him sign anything, he saw my helmet with Terrell Suggs and other Ravens and made a comment about it but when I ask if he could sign it he looked at his people and they said NO. I tell you if you are going to treat your fans like that after they spend their hard earned money on your book in these tough economic times, I dont think Mrs Tuohy would approve, shge taught you better than that. I tell you after watching the movie I was excited to meet him and then I did and now i am sooooooo diaspponted in him! I just want my favorite DVD Bliindside autographed thats all, if anyone can help with this I would be happy to mail it to him, any help is appreciated. Thanks to all and God Bless!

Awesome story. Watched 4-5 times. Took a breather for a few weeks and have promptly lost the DVD. I will buy another! If all is even remotely close to the truth, I complement everyone. Tony. Each person that fed him from the back porch. And not just them. Teachers, friends, and strangers. Michael, you made this just as special with your demeanor, morals, and steadfastness. Thank you for your determination and focus. If you had not gone forward, we would not all love this humbling story.

I’d offer to have you come by for a handshake and/or a home meal, but I’m certain there are others out there that need that as well. And I will continue giving.

Continue being that model for all kids AND adults! More often than not, the latter need more help in remembering what we should be doing!

I’m a football fan, with no particular team namesake. It’s much more about the character of the player. You’re at the top of my list!

I just watched “The Blind Side”, never realizing until the end that it was based on a true story or real people. I cried so much during the movie because it is such a beautiful story. Great story. What ever happened with Michael’s brother, in the movie he found him working as a buss boy at the restaurant. They hugged, Michael mentions that he hadn’t seen him since he was little. Has Michael kept in touch with his birth brother? What about the other 11 siblings? I made my whole family watch this movie, it’s so inspirational, makes you appreciate what you have.

Growing up you dont think much about people with this kind of problem..but as you grow older you learn about things like this and it really touches the heart. My parents had problems with drugs but now that i look back and i think about it i had it good compared to Michael and i would like to tell his FAMILY that they are great people and inspire many!! We are doing a sports page in journalism based on true stories. It was either Rudy or Michael Oher! Of course, I chose Michael! His story is so real and eye-opening, it should mean alot to other kids who went through the same thing as a child. Michael is such a strong person in life & I wish him the very best in everything he does. He has a strong family behind him 100% and a bunch of his fans support you all the way. I love the movie because it shows a side of you in which you became stronger as you got to know the Tuohy’s. Leigh Anne took him in as she saw you walking in the snow (what a great woman!) and SJ was scared in the movie because he thought he was going to lose his big brother. Congrats in everything you do, Michael!

I love this story, my friend told me to read the section where Michael tried to “put the kid on the bus” and instantly after that I bought the book for myself. Since then I followed the college career at Ole Miss and prayed the Patriots would pick him up. I was ripping my hair out when they announced they traded the pick…well regardless how much I dislike the Ravens Michael Oher will remain one of my favorite NFL players of all time. The story of his life is truly inspirational, and I wish Michael the best with his career.

I have never been touched by anything in my life like this movie. I watch it over and over. Leigh Anne is my hero. I cry every time, sometimes so hard I can’t hardly breath. When my husband comes in and sees me crying he will say you’v been watching Blind Side again. Its breaks my heart to think someone as humble, sweet, and kind as Michael had to go through what he did. God sent Michael to the Tuohys. That whole family is wonderful. If I had kids and they were like yours my head would explode with pride. Its an inspirational story, one that touched me as well. However not everyone can do as much to help people as the Tuohys have been able to help Micheal and I think its important for people to realize that if we all give a little of ourselves we all can help the world be a better place to live. Give the shirt off your back or buy someone who needs food a burger it might not seem like much but it will make someone who is less fortunate have a little better day

God is so marvelous! Michael you are as blessing to many youth today. It took a very courageous family to take you in and rise above the stereo-types/biases and prove that there are good people in the world today. You are blessed and highly favored and the advice you gave above in regards to money is phenomenal. Michael when I saw the blind side you hit me with sadness. I am so sorry what happened to you as a child im 13 right now and i lost my mom at the age of 10. I just don’t know how you could live like that as a child. I remember when I saw your name in the draft and i was so happy for you. Someday your see all your brothers again up in heaven and ill see my mom again. You inspire me in soooo many ways. Too often people look at others and ignore them do to what they think they see. All to often people are ignored and pushed aside when they need help do to fear of the unknown. I love this story and am so glad to see that there are still people out there that are not afraid to open their hearts and help others.

I am watching The Blind Side right now even as I type this. This is like my 4th or 5th time to watch it. I tell you, I get choked up every time I watch this very inspiring true story movie. I myself have a similar story. I mean, I’m not a famous sought-after sports athlete, but I had some curious obstacles to overcome and had no help at all. All the help I had, my Mom and Grandma, both suddenly died in ’98. I was penniless and lived deep in the wooded community. Plus I was wheelchair bound due to a car accident. I had nothing and no one. But today Iam walking again, a for sure miracle from God. I am happily married, am working, and it is all because I looked in the mirror, too, literally! I said “This isn’t Brian W!” And with myself and God, I went out, and through tremendous pain and hurt, I found Brian W.

I am truly inspired by your story, Michael! I get tears of sadness, then joy everytime I watch your story, The Blind Side!

I was moved by this story. I work with inner city kids in a roller-hockey outreach. I am touched and makes me realize that I do not do enough for these kids.
This must have been a tough story to recount and I am truly thankful to Michael and family for sharing.
Too often we overlook those in need and are quick to dismiss those we don’t relate to. This story has changed my life.

My husband and I just watched the movie. Too sad there are not more people like the Hendersons and the Touhys willing to help marginal kids. Too bad there are not more kids from Michael’s situation that would truly appreciate the charitable act. But thank God it all clicked in this situation and has given new hope and inspiration to many.

I watched the movie on fast forward way. But i still understand the content. i am touched by the loving heart of Tuohy family. Without them Micheal Oher may not be on his success right now. May the Lord give you more Blessing Touhy Family. Michael Oher’s childhood is extremely pityful. In reality nowadays a lot a lot of child we’re facing the same situation with Michael Oher. I just wished that there we’re also family like Touhy family who can give unconditional love to a person who they barely know. If donation cannot solve poverty, let it be with love.

I am sitting in Balad Iraq crying through 3/4 of this wonderful movie. I am a civilian contractor and I bought the movie to watch. I do not think I have been moved by a movie like this before. This is just a wonderful story and I want to thank you great people like you for the amazing hearts for opening your home to a special person. I have never heard of Michael Oher before today but I will continue to pray for a successful career and for an amazing family. I hate Tennessee also, I can not like the Ravens for leaving Indy. Hi Michael and Family,
I just watched the movie The Blind Side and I was so moved by the movie I had to get up and look it up on the internet. I do not watch much football so I had no idea of your story. You have overcome a lot in life to get where you are today. You are an inspiration to all those around you. I wish you the best in all you do.

Ashish, Thanks for posting! I am so glad that Michael has told his story via the movie and now his own book. The Tuohy’s have written their own book on their experience as a family and I encourage everyone to get it as it is a great way to see this story from a different perspective!

Thanks for the movie The Blind Side

you know before watching that movie i wasn’t aware who is Michael Oher because usually i don’t see the football, well actually i am India where everybody likes Cricket and after watching the movie i realized i should thanks to Tuohy’s family for bringing a true hero of life and each and every family member who supported mike and understand how a person can feel at the age of 7 everything you have done its a masterpiece for humanity and understanding that might have a need at the age of 7 i really don’t know what to say more just wants to say a BIG THANKS to Tuohy’s family god bless
